To ensure durability of your weather-exposed structures, there a few simple rules to follow:

  1. Use H4 treated timber for below ground, and H3 treated timber for above ground.
  2. Finish the timber with top or end caps
  3. Paint or coat the timber
  4. Round the sharp edges of the timber
  5. Protect the timber from moisture or direct sun where possible
  6. Use drip edges to provide free moisture flow away from the beam
  7. Protect joists and bearers where possible
  8. Use damp-proof membranes where the beam may come into contact with moisture
